On topics of vital concern for our nation these days the most difficult part seems to be the end of the conversation. That point where, after thrashing out all of the facts of each crisis, be it health care, the economy, Afghanistan, global warming, or unbridled corporate influence on journalism and politics, we come sadly, maybe even kicking and fighting, to an inevitable conclusion: We’re screwed.

Exposing wrongheadedness, greed and illegality is one thing, being able to stop it is another.

But we get an A for effort. Armed with our well researched facts, a litany of experts and, frequently, the rule of law on our side, we march forward and confront those calling the shots, you know, that wealthy top 1 per cent, with all of the guns and money?

With righteous indignation we rain our fury down upon them. “This wrong doing must stop!” Hell, we may even throw in a lawsuit for good measure.

And the basic response? Brief and to the point. “You and Whose Army? Or, as Dick Cheney so eloquently put it — “So?”
